Deer Isle, Maine
We’ll take a boat trip and see a few of the hundreds of islands that dot this coastline, spend time writing, exploring or sitting on the beach at the cottage, located on a granite ledge overlooking the ocean, daily yoga classes in the forest, a day of food gathering, farmers market and cooking and we’ll do botanical dying from foraged plants that you’ll be able to take home.
Come spend a week with us on beautiful Deer Isle
Deer Isle is a remote island off the coast of Maine connected to the mainland by a soaring bridge. From there you enter a special community: two small villages, Deer Isle Village and Stonington, with almost 3000 year round residents. The island features art, lobster and recreation in abundance. Stonington, at the southern tip of the island, is the largest lobster port in the United States and very much a working fishing village. Granite that has been featured in bridges and buildings in Washington DC and New York City is also quarried there. The Haystack School of Arts and Crafts, on the east side of the island, attracts painters, woodworkers, and other makers to its studios. Many have fallen in love with its beauty and stayed, and there are artists’ galleries and studios all around the island. A robust conservation program has resulted in many public walkways and hiking trails. Off the coast, kayakers and sailors ply the waters of Penobscot Bay, known for its many islands and tidal coves.
